Street Photography: How to Take Portraits on the Street

Street portraiture is a complex discipline. We must not only learn to photograph people properly, but also to manage interaction with the people we meet during our journey. Lear the ability to persuade but also respect and understand the subject.

A good portrait must reveal or give some insight into a person’s condition, or the human condition in general.

Street portraits are environmental portraits so we will also have to learn to correctly handle the framing, the relationships between the subject and the environment, and the light.

Divided into small work groups, we will discuss all the difficulties encountered during the pratical sessions.

Session 2: Saturday, July 22nd, 2024

Studio Portraits: When you Control Everything

We will explore contemporary studio portraiture, one of the most complex photographic genres whose difficulties are often underestimated even by the most experienced photographers. The photographer not only has to know the photographic technique very well and possess a sensitivity that helps them to adequately manage the photographed subject, but must arrive at the session with a clear idea of how they wants to represent the person portrayed.

The contemporary portraitist has the task of developing an expressive mode through a series of creative concepts that will be the key to achieving images in balance between documentation and artistic research.

In the first part of the day Eolo and Steve will accompany the participants in a journey that will examine photographic and lighting techniques in artificial light and mixed light, without forgetting the center of each portrait that is the subject that we will have to photograph.

The second part of the day will be dedicated to a series of individual shooting sessions in which each participant will have a model at their disposal to be able to test what was discussed in the theoretical part. Each shooting session will be individual and can only take one photographer at a time. However, the experience will be lived in continuous interaction with the teacher, thus making the training session useful also for other photographers.

This part of the workshop will be held at the Eolo Photo Studio, an elegant and functional photo studio. Its structure allows you to work in large and bright spaces, offering the possibility to easily carry out all training activities. The studio covers an area of about 200 square meters and is the result of the recovery of an ancient industrial laundry. The heights range from 4 to eight meters. The dressing room has 4 makeup stations and a changing area.
